National Institute of Technology (Regional Institute of Technology) (NIT) - Jamshedpur was founded in the year 1960 as a joint venture project initiated by the Government of India and the Government of Bihar. The institute is situated in the outskirts of Jamshedpur, the Steel city of the Tatas. It offers UG, PG and research degrees in 12 disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management. FACTS
The institute was upgraded to the status of a deemed university under the name of National Institute of Technology in December 2002. NIT has several departments in various disciplines of engineering and the pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized on a unique pattern of functioning. There are as many as 115 faculty members and 300 administrative and supportive staff under the pay roll of the institute. The institute campus also houses a computer centre with as many as 200 computers for the benefit of the students and the staff.

Trivia

The institute maintains 10 hostels in all with furnished rooms and amenities. The institute comprises courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis. It also has cricket, hockey and football grounds along with a gymnasium for the over all development of its students. NIT offers 2-month summer training or industrial training at the end of 6th semester, which is compulsory for all UG students. Many multi-national companies conduct campus recruitment for students in the end of the final semesters.
